Lt Gen (Dr) Kamal Jit Singh, PVSM, AVSM & Bar (Veteran) is a veteran soldiers’ general, scholar-warrior, and strategic thinker with nearly five decades of distinguished service to the nation. A self-made leader, he has commanded some of the Indian Army’s most critical operational formations, including the Western Army Command, Sikkim Corps, and an Armoured Division, leading operations along the Pakistan and Sino-Indian borders and managing complex counter-terrorism missions across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and the North East.

His career extends beyond national boundaries and conventional command. He served on a United Nations peace-building mission in Angola, earning a UN Force Commander’s citation for bravery, and held key human resource and capability-building appointments at Army Headquarters. These experiences shaped his holistic understanding of leadership, security, and institutional excellence. For his exceptional service, he has been awarded PVSM, AVSM & Bar, multiple Army commendations, and recognition as an “Eminent Punjabi” by the Government of Punjab.

A respected academic, author, and public intellectual, Lt Gen Singh holds a PhD in Defence Studies and serves as Honorary Professor at Panjab University and Professor of Practice at Chandigarh University. He is the author of two acclaimed books, a regular columnist, and a frequent commentator on national security. Post-retirement, he continues to contribute through public policy, education, defence manufacturing, and cyber security advisory roles, driven by his mission of nation building and empowering “Nagrik Yodhas” (Citizen Warriors).

Mission

Lt Gen (Dr) Kamal Jit Singh’s mission is to continue serving the nation beyond uniform by strengthening India’s strategic consciousness, institutional resilience, and citizen participation. Having spent nearly five decades in uniform, he believes that national security is no longer the sole responsibility of armed forces but a shared responsibility of informed institutions and aware citizens. His focus is on fostering a deeper understanding of security, governance, leadership, and national purpose across civil society.

Central to this mission is his vision of preparing “Nagrik Yodhas” (Citizen Warriors)—responsible, informed citizens who possess clarity of thought, national pride, and the ability to engage constructively with India’s evolving strategic challenges. Lt Gen Singh’s military career spans nearly five decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army, during which he held some of the most critical command and leadership appointments. He commanded major operational formations, including the Western Army Command, responsible for sensitive stretches of the India–Pakistan border, and the Sikkim Corps, which safeguards borders with multiple nations and protects the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor.

His leadership encompassed operations along the Sino-Indian frontier, intensive counter-terrorism campaigns in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and the North East, and participation in a United Nations peace-building mission in Angola, where he was cited for bravery by the UN Force Commander. These experiences shaped his reputation as a decisive yet balanced leader, capable of managing complex security environments while maintaining operational effectiveness and ethical command.

Experience

Beyond battlefield command, Lt Gen Singh possesses extensive experience in institution building, human resource development, governance, and strategic advisory roles. At Army Headquarters, he anchored key human resource and capability-building functions, contributing to leadership development and organisational preparedness within the Indian Army.

Following retirement, he continued to serve in public life as Advisor to the Chief Minister of Haryana, Haryana State Information Commissioner, and Chairman of the UT Education Committee (Advisory Council). In parallel, he actively engages with the private sector, mentoring and advising organisations in defence manufacturing, cyber security, and emerging technologies, helping align industry capabilities with national strategic priorities.

A distinguished scholar-warrior and thought leader, Lt Gen (Dr) Kamal Jit Singh has consistently combined operational experience with academic rigor. He holds a PhD in Defence Studies from Panjab University and has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his contribution to national security and strategic studies. He currently serves as Honorary Professor at Panjab University, Professor of Practice at Chandigarh University, and Faculty Emeritus at Rashtriya Raksha University.

An accomplished author and public intellectual, he has written two highly acclaimed books, published over 200 articles, and remains a regular contributor to national discourse through academic forums, policy platforms, and electronic and print media.
